TWO new laser scanners capable of “seeing” through the thickest eye problems are among the latest equipment the League has bought for the Jethro Arscott ophthalmic day surgery unit.

Consultant Mr Pieter Gouws, unit matron Lesley Carter and members of their team told League officers of their delight in the new equipment at a photo-call at the unit on Wednesday, April 12th.

With the assistance of a team member as “patient,” they demonstrated one of the IOL Master 700 devices. Also on display was the £765 Clini-Kart the League has bought. Loaded with emergency equipment including oxygen, the cart can be wheeled to any part of the main hospital block to respond to patient crises.

The equipment on display was part of a £102,426 package of purchases for the eye unit agreed at the League's February meeting, some of which has yet to be delivered.

Representing the League were Chairman Cllr Stuart Earl, Treasurer Chris Ashford, President John Dowling and Vice President Peter Mitchell-Davis. Mr Gouws said: “These machines are much more accurate; much more reliable. They do it automatically - it is almost 'point-and-press.'”

The IOL machines will enable Mr Gouws and his colleagues to measure the thickness and curvature of the cornea with even greater accuracy than the preceding models in order to select the correct lens to be surgically inserted in the eye. Both a hard-copy print-off of the image taken and an electronic version are kept. Both are checked before the lens is inserted to ensure that the correct lens is used.

The unit is currently undertaking around 2,300 of the 4,500 eye operations undertaken each year by East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. The Bexhill unit was recently complemented by a visiting team from Morfields eye hospital on its surgical results, its staff training and on the high standard of its equipment.

Matron Carter told the League officers: “Thank you so much for continuing to support us. We wouldn't be able to do the high-quality work we do here without the right equipment.”
